In a situation where you are stuck in a place where you cannot do much for yourself or others, it becomes a little difficult to ensure that the person you love and value gets to know just how significant they are to you. It is however imperative, as times such as these tend to create a feeling that perhaps; we are alone after-all.
Special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and such, are always an excuse to reconnect with that person who is important to you but seems to have lost touch. A day that is special to them demands attention and even though you cannot be there physically to make sure, they have a great
time, you can still make it a special day. Technology has allowed us to talk to each other face to face even when we are miles away, so why not use that technology to amass a multitude of your favourite people who you know would love to make their day special, and make it an evening to fondly recollect. Nothing says ‘I care’ better than a heartfelt message to your loved one marking a special moment in your shared history.
Since you are unable to display physical affection to express your sentiments, it would help to convey the long awaited hug into a few, equally moving words. Now, do not think I neglected to address the people out there who find it hard to convey what they feel through the form of words. I
encourage you that even though you may have trouble speaking them out loud, just grab a pen and paper (or your phone) and write it down. It might feel a little embarrassing at first, but it would make your loved one’s day a speck brighter, and you might feel better knowing that you illuminated someone’s day. At the end of the day, it would not matter that you have terrible writing skills or your grammar wasn’t quite right, your deed will surely reflect your efforts. Uncertainty is a factor that is not brought under the spotlight enough, but it can be a root cause to the unfolding of a chain of negative emotions and events. One of the major causes of the deterioration of any relationship is uncertainty. Being unsure if the feelings are mutual on both ends, being unsure if our actions are reciprocated, being unsure if we are appreciated and acknowledged for our efforts. Communication becomes key in a situation where you cannot physically pop a situation to make it better. It becomes an important part of eradicating any festering feelings of insecurity. Now, communication is important as it is in any relationship, but in times when your actions cannot speak louder than your words, it becomes as important as water to a fish. Forgive yourself for not emotionally checking in with your partner a week or so earlier, but make sure you make an effort to do so from now on. You never know what goes through a person’s mind in a panicked situation, but simply being aware of the fact that you will definitely be there for them in any trying time, helps just a little to ease the stress. These times have had distinct effects on people, some are glad to finally have time to themselves and their family, some have to perform essential duties, which require them to go out and face the outbreak head-on, many are strickened with financial uncertainty, and many are struggling to keep their negative emotions at bay. So you never know, a phone call from someone who really cares for them might keep them afloat or at least create a safe space to share what their feeling instead of following through with an emotional lockdown too!
It is important to remember that nobody is perfect when it comes to handling relationships in the real world. Others can give you suggestions based on experiences they have had with in a relationship, but every relationship comes with a unique set of experiences that are private to the individuals involved. There are no default rules to make a relationship successful.
The important thing is that you make an effort. At the end of the day, it involves two parties and it demands the time and effort of both. So as long as you have tried your best to be there for someone you care about, the feelings will tend towards satisfaction with one another.
