Counselling is a “tailor made” therapy that allows people to discuss their problems and any difficult feelings they acquire in a confidential and safe environment. It involves a trained therapist listening to you empathetically and helping you find ways to deal with emotional and relational issues
Counselling is for anyone who is suffering from a crisis on a personal, emotional, relational and occupational level or who wish to take care of their mental health.
The counselling process is a planned, structured dialogue between the counselor and the client. The counselor uses different psychological therapies and techniques to help you live your best life. It starts with an introductory session followed by identification of certain issues that one must be facing. It is then followed with therapies and techniques to facilitate the journey of self discovery and rise to lead a more healthy and fulfilling life.
The number of sessions vary according to individual requirements and are usually decided after the first two sessions. However it is recommended to take a minimum of five sessions to see significant improvement.
There are numerous benefits of taking up counselling. Some of which are:
Gaining a better understanding of your own thoughts, feelings and behavior.
Improvement in health and well being
Significant increase in confidence and self esteem
Obtaining a sense of comfort and inner peace
Clarity of personal and professional goals
Increasing performance at work and school
Improving relationships and resolving conflict with loved ones
Counselors and psychologists focus on the emotional, social and behavioral aspect of the client. Talk therapy plays a major role in counselling.
Psychiatrists focus on the biological aspect of the person by prescribing medicines along with using other techniques to aid the client

A counselor’s job is to make you independent in every aspect of your life and make your own decisions. Therefore, dependence on counselors is unlikely to occur. If it does occur, understand that it is normal because you share so much of your life with them. Counselors however are trained professionals and competent to take care of such dependency if it occurs.

There are no fixed rules on bringing loved ones. While, it is always beneficial to talk one on one, you may still bring in your loved one for the session. Your loved one may wait inside or outside depending on your discretion.
Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions – disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. The severity of the symptoms depends upon the level of mental illness. One in five adults experience a mental condition every year. In addition to directly experiencing a mental illness, the family, friends and community of the person are also affected.
It is possible for a person suffering with mental illness to live a fulfilled life. With the help of a proper diagnosis and treatment, mental illnesses can be either treated or in cases where certain disorders are not treatable symptoms can be managed leading to a person lead a fulfilling life.
If you notice continued symptoms, be there to help the person, let them know you are available and help them consult a mental health professional. Early identification and diagnosis is key to start the recovery process.
Most people begin feeling better after taking medication, however, before you stop taking medication, consult a doctor. In most cases, the symptoms have a tendency to reappear so it always a good option to consult with your doctor.
Since there is no one cause of mental illness, there is no sure way to prevent it. However, you can certainly reduce the risk by practicing self care, adopting a healthy lifestyle, taking steps to boost physical and mental health through activities like exercise, meditation as well as being aware and recognizing early signs and symptoms as they occur and seek professional help when needed.
It is normal to feel sad, angry, upset, frustrated, confused sometimes. But when you feel that these symptoms or feelings begin to interfere with your life, you could be in a need of help. Further, though every illness has different symptoms most common symptoms include:
Confused thinking
Extreme mood swings
Unexplained physical problems
Sudden outbursts of anger
Long lasting sadness
Excessive anxiety, fear or worry
Thoughts of suicide
Hallucinations or delusions
Abuse or drugs or alcohol
Unexplained changes in eating or sleeping
Denial of problems
Inability to handle daily tasks
counselling is not a life long process. The estimated time for which the sessions are conducted vary with the illness. The length of therapy depends on the severity and intensity of one’s condition.
The number of sessions depends on the severity of the case. The first session is usually an introductory and an icebreaker session, where we make you feel comfortable and secure enough to speak with ease about your issues. Therefore, it will take more than one session to solve your conflicts.
Counselors are trained to provide help and support without judgement on your personal problems. They are unbiased and neutral in their approach, something which a loved one cannot provide. Their objectivity is the reason for effective counselling
The age of the therapist has no bearing on his/her professional competence. The education, training and experience that they undergo gives them the ability to provide therapy.
If you are unhappy about the counselling that you receive, it is very important that you talk to your counselor regarding the issue that you are having.
A therapeutic relationship is different by design. It is an important difference in that professional boundaries are in place and should remain that way. The intent is to ensure that what happens is for the client's benefit.

Pre-marital counselling is a method of preventative counselling where the couple works through any existing issues before they enter into marriage and also acquires tools to recognize and resolve conflicts with ease. This is a sensitive period where couples may not be comfortable enough to discuss certain topics such as:
Affection & Sex
Desire to have children
Family relationships
Decision making
Parenting styles
Spending time together
Beliefs and values
Pre marital counselling gives couples a neutral ground to discuss such sensitive topics without having major conflicts.

counselling in today’s day starts very early in life so there is no set age for when you can bring your child for counselling. It is preferable if the child is above the age of 1-2, which is the age where they start speaking and socializing more.
One needs to be involved in their child’s treatment from the very beginning. Going through the process of counselling can be overwhelming for a child as well as for the parents so it is important to be involved and support the child through every step of the counselling process.
